For Couples at a Crossroads

Discernment Counseling

That gap between you is not new. But lately it feels different. One of you is thinking seriously about leaving. The other is not. And the conversations you keep having are not getting either of you anywhere. You do not need another argument. You need a process.

WHAT IS IT?

Discernment Counseling is not couples therapy. It is not about learning new communication tools or revisiting old wounds. It exists for one very specific moment: when a marriage has reached a genuine crossroads and both people deserve an honest, supportive space to figure out what comes next.

HOW IT WORKS

Structured. Time-limited. Built for clarity.

This is a 1 to 5 session process. Sessions are not open-ended. They are purposeful. The work is designed to help you move out of the stuck middle and confidently toward a clear decision regarding what happens next.

Session 1 // The Foundation Session

Two hours. You will begin together and also meet individually with your therapist. This session is about building a full, honest picture: : where you are, how you got here, and what each of you actually needs to move forward.

Sessions 2 through 5 // The Discernment Work

1.5 hours each. These sessions are need-based, not automatic. Based on what surfaces in Session 1, you may have one to four additional sessions. By session five at most, the goal is to arrive at a clear next step for your marriage.

The Outcome

Discernment Counseling concludes when you and your spouse, individually or together, have reached enough clarity to choose a direction. That direction may be reconciliation and a commitment to deeper therapeutic work or it may be a conscious decision to separate or end the marriage. The goal is not to steer you towards a particular outcome. It is to help you land at a clear one.

Do we need discernment counseling?

This for you if:

  • You’re married and one of you is seriously considering separation or divorce and the other is not

  • You have tried couples therapy before and it never quite touched the real issue.

  • The conversations at home keep going in circles and you need something more structured.

  • You both want clarity, even if you’re not sure that you want the same outcome.
